Learn the basics in our guide to 8 essential hand embroidery stitches and how to transfer Victorian designs to fabric.

Vintage Embroidery Patterns: questions & answers

Are these iron-on embroidery transfers?
No. The PDFs reproduce historic catalogue pages. Print a design at the size you need and trace it onto fabric with a light box, a window or dressmaker's carbon paper.
Can I use the designs for machine embroidery?
The files are page scans for hand embroidery and tracing. They are not digitized machine embroidery files.
Which embroidery book is best for beginners?
Start with the 1915 Elementary Embroidery course. It teaches the core stitches step by step before moving on to lettering, whitework and crewel work.
