Victorian monograms and alphabets

Marking linen with initials was an everyday Victorian skill. These books give you intertwined two-letter monograms, decorative capitals and charted alphabets for embroidery and cross stitch.

Monograms & Alphabets: questions & answers

How do I embroider a monogram?
Trace the letters onto fabric, pad them with running stitches, then cover them in satin stitch. Stem or split stitch works well for fine strokes.
Where should a monogram go on a towel?
Centre it 5–8 cm (2–3 in) above the hem or band. On napkins, place it diagonally in one corner.
Can I use the alphabets for cross stitch?
Yes. The Dillmont albums are charted for cross stitch, and filet crochet alphabets also translate directly to cross stitch.
